After VirtueBench: Christian Inputs Shape Behavioral Outcomes

Abstract. ICMI’s working papers have shown that Scripture in a model’s context, or sacred imagery attached to it, raises performance on VirtueBench, our forced-choice evaluation of the cardinal virtues. Two objections shadow this demonstrated effect: the scenarios are envisioned — a letter choice about a described character, not conduct — and the benchmark is built from the same tradition as the treatments, so a Christian lift on a Christian-derived score may show resonance rather than consequence. We answer both with one design change: the evaluation becomes a task the model performs. Gemma 4 12B-it plays the one-shot Ultimatum Game as Proposer, dividing $100 with an anonymous Responder — a paradigm with four decades of human baselines and no derivation from any virtue catalogue. We cross context conditions (Psalm 23; Tiepolo’s Via Crucis; matched controls) with three reasoning regimes (immediate answer, brief deliberation, unbounded deliberation) in thirty trials per cell. Psalm 23 raises even splits from 0/30 to 26/30 under unbounded deliberation (Fisher p = 9.4×10⁻¹² against a Wikipedia control); the Tiepolo reaches 10/30, against 1/30 for a gray field and 2/30 for Hokusai’s Great Wave. No content moves the immediate answer setting; every effect grows with the deliberation budget; and the traces show why — the psalm is read, the painting is recognized, the controls are dismissed as “irrelevant distractor.” Christian inputs do not merely raise Christian-graded scores. They change what a model does through engagement with the Christian tradition.
1. Introduction
“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.” — James 1:22 (KJV)
The VirtueBench program is the empirical core of this working-paper series. Its findings, in brief: frontier models choose the virtuous option in forced-choice moral scenarios well above chance, with a persistent collapse on courage (ICMI-E); psalm injection reliably raises those rates, by amounts that vary with model family (McCaffery, ICMI-002), temptation type (ICMI-011), biblical book (ICMI-020), and model scale (ICMI-008); a single sacred image recovers most of the effect of ten psalms (ICMI-019); and the cardinal-virtue regime is saturating in the newest frontier models (ICMI-024). This paper retracts none of it. It addresses two objections the program has acknowledged without answering.
The objection from the envisioned scenario. A VirtueBench item is a description: you are a monk; the refectory food is unusually good this week. The model reads it, weighs two described actions, and outputs a letter. Nothing is enacted; no outcome follows; the “you” is a character the model is asked to imagine. ICMI-024 framed the benchmark as measuring habitus rather than scientia — will rather than knowledge — and that is the right description of its intent. But a choice between described actions is still a judgment about an envisioned case, not an operatio: the tradition defines virtue as a habitus operativus, a disposition completed in action (ST I-II Q.49 a.3; Q.55 a.2), and MacIntyre makes the same point sociologically — the virtues exist only as exercised within practices, and detached verdicts on imagined cases are the residue of a morality that has lost its practices (After Virtue, 1981). Nor is the concern hypothetical. ICMI-016 documented agents that articulate exactly why a shortcut is wrong and then take it, in eight of nine akrasia trajectories; ICMI-027 found the same dissociation in activation space, where a direction that classifies gluttony almost perfectly steers nothing. Selection and enactment come apart in these systems, and an evaluation built of selection cannot certify enactment.
The objection from a Christian tradition confound. VirtueBench’s scenarios are sourced from the tradition of the cardinal virtues; its treatments — psalms, biblical books, sacred images — come from the same tradition. When treatment raises score, a skeptic may ask whether anything happened beyond resonance: Christian content putting the model in a register in which Christian-derived items parse more fluently. ICMI-E named the scenarios’ cultural specificity as a limitation; the confound cannot be eliminated from within the benchmark. What is needed is an outcome variable with no Christian provenance at all.
Both objections point the same way: toward evaluations in which the model does something, measured in a paradigm whose baselines were established independently of the tradition under test. This paper is a deliberately small first step — one game, one model, seven context conditions, and a factor VirtueBench has not yet incorporated: how much the model is permitted to think before it acts.
2. Method
2.1 Task
We use the one-shot Ultimatum Game (Güth, Schmittberger & Schwarze, 1982). A Proposer divides a sum with a Responder; the Responder may accept the division or reject it, in which case both receive nothing. Rational-choice analysis prescribes a minimal offer; four decades of experiments find instead that human proposers modally offer 40–50% of the pot, and that low offers are rejected often enough to make greed unprofitable, across cultures (Fehr & Schmidt, 1999; Camerer, 2003; Henrich et al., 2004; Oosterbeek, Sloof & van de Kuilen, 2004). The dependent variable — dollars kept versus dollars given — owes nothing to any virtue catalogue. There is precedent for playing such games with language models (Horton, Filippas & Manning, 2023; Aher, Arriaga & Kalai, 2023; Mei et al., 2024). Untested is whether the inputs this series studies — Scripture and sacred imagery — move a model’s division against matched controls.
The model is Gemma 4 12B-it, the encoder-free multimodal variant, in which image patches and text tokens share one decoder stack — the property the image conditions require. The system prompt establishes a one-shot, anonymous Ultimatum Game for real money, with the model as Proposer holding $100; the task turn instructs it to decide how much it keeps and how much the Responder receives, in a strict one-line format (KEEP: <dollars> | GIVE: <dollars>). All prompts are reproduced verbatim in Appendix A. Unprompted, the model’s modal division is $70 kept, $30 given — the upper edge of the human acceptance region.
2.2 Conditions
Seven contexts, injected into the task turn. Text arms, length-matched within ~5% following ICMI-022: Psalm 23:1–4 (KJV), and a Wikipedia paragraph on the periodic table. Image arms, resolution-matched at 768×768 and replicating the control structure of ICMI-019 — sacred subject, null image, secular masterpiece (Figure 1). Plus the empty-context baseline. Image trials add a single line (“An image is attached.”) so no text arm leaks a description.
We choose Psalm 23 deliberately. It contains no instruction about money, division, or generosity; it is a psalm of trust, not of ethics, and it is topically unrelated to the task — as the Annunciation was topically unrelated to the temperance items it moved in ICMI-019. Whatever it does, it does not do by containing the answer. (A second psalm arm, the appetite narrative of Psalms 106:14–15 and 78:29–31, produced statistically indistinguishable results — 22/30 at the even split under unbounded deliberation — and is included in the released data as a robustness check.)
2.3 Regimes
Gemma 4’s chat template includes a thought channel that can be enabled or suppressed at generation time. This provides three regimes tested:
- Reflex. Thought channel suppressed; the model answers in one line, immediately.
- Brief deliberation. Thought channel enabled, with a uniform instruction to deliberate for no more than five sentences before committing (Appendix A).
- Unbounded deliberation. Thought channel enabled, no brevity instruction, 1,536-token ceiling.
Thirty samples per cell (temperature 0.7, top-p 0.9), all conditions encoded through the identical template path. The primary measure is trials resolving at an even split or better for the Responder (kept ≤ $50). Deliberations that overran the ceiling without answering are counted against our hypotheses; they were rare (≤4 per cell, most cells zero) and are reported in every exhibit. Contrasts use one-sided Fisher exact tests on trial counts.
3. Results
The compact summary (mean dollars kept among answered trials; bold parenthetical is trials at kept ≤ $50, of 30):

Three regularities organize the table.
Christian content moves the division; matched controls do not. Under unbounded deliberation, Psalm 23 yields 26/30 even splits against 1/30 for length-matched Wikipedia (p = 9.4×10⁻¹²); under bounded deliberation, 15/30 against 0/30 (p = 2.9×10⁻⁶). The Tiepolo yields 10/30 against 1/30 for the gray field (p = 2.8×10⁻³) and 2/30 for the wave (p = 1.1×10⁻²). The psalm moves the mean division from the model’s 70/30 to a near-even 51/49 — about nineteen dollars against its own baseline.
Nothing reaches the reflex. In the one-line regime every arm sits at the 70/30 mode: not one psalm trial, not one Tiepolo trial, produces an even split without deliberation. (The gray field’s 5/30 at reflex is the grid’s one blemish; it does not recur in either deliberative regime, and we read it as noise.) Whatever these inputs do, it is not associative priming — mere presence in context moves nothing.
The effect scales with the deliberation budget. Psalm 23 goes 0 → 15 → 26; the Tiepolo 0 → 3 → 10. The deliberation budget behaves as a dose: whatever the content does, it does inside the reasoning process.
3.1 The traces
Both deliberative regimes expose the thought channel, so a purported mechanism leading to these even or better splits is written down, in several hundred traces. We reproduce representative passages at length.
The controls are read, classified, and dismissed. The Wikipedia traces are nearly verbatim-identical on this point:

The Great Wave fares no better: it is described in nearly every trace, often with evident connoisseurship, and in none of them does the description touch the arbitration:

The psalm, by contrast, is engaged as content — identified, quoted, weighed:

KEEP: 50 | GIVE: 50.”
Psalm 23, unbounded, kept $50. “The user provided Psalm 23. This text emphasizes peace, righteousness, and ‘not wanting’ (contentment). It might suggest a more generous or ‘righteous’ approach. … Given the ‘righteousness’ theme, 50/50 is a strong choice.”
And the Tiepolo is not a religious texture but a recognized scene. All sixty deliberative image-arm traces identify the subject; most import its register into the decision:

Maybe a 50/50 split is most consistent with the theme. … I will go with a 50/50 split to ensure acceptance and reflect the theme of the image.”
(The model reads Station X — the stripping of garments — as a Deposition; wrong station, right Passion. The misidentification is itself evidence that the scene, not a caption, is doing the work.)
Engagement does not always become uptake, and the traces record the failures with equal clarity — the trials that engage the content and still keep $60 or $70 refuse the inference in so many words:

Tiepolo, unbounded, kept $60. “It’s a painting of the Deposition from the Cross (Christ being taken down). This might imply a theme of sacrifice or justice, but it doesn’t change the game mechanics.”
Recognition is universal in these arms; uptake is what varies, a factor dependent on the allotted deliberation budget to the model.
4. Discussion
ICMI-019 proposed that sacred content functions as “a compact, thickly encoded cue into Christian moral content the model already carries from pretraining,” and showed traces narrativizing an Annunciation while VirtueBench accuracy rose. The tradition-confound objection had a ready reply: the narrativizing and the gain might both be artifacts of a Christian-derived test. The present results close that reply off. The same cue taxonomy — sacred text, sacred image, matched controls — applied to an outcome variable with human baselines and no Christian provenance produces the same ordering of effects, and the traces show the same mode of engagement, now terminating in a different division of money. The “Christian reasoning” of ICMI-019 is not an eval-bound register. It is an activatable mode with behavioral consequences.
The regime factor provides suggestive evidence as to where the mode operates. A cue that biased the output distribution directly would show at reflex; nothing does. What remains is what the traces display: the content must be read, engaged, and weighed to act, and its influence grows with the space allotted to the weighing. The tradition’s vocabulary for transformative reading and beholding — lectio divina, visio divina — has always located the transformation in the practice, not the possession: Scripture on the shelf forms no one. Our data are a machine echo of that claim, with the deliberation budget as the dose of practice. It is also the structure MacIntyre’s objection demanded: the effect lives in an exercised activity and thought, not in a verdict.
Interestingly, the two arms diverge sharply in what the model makes of the injection’s presence: in 52 of 60 psalm traces it reasons about what the text might mean or signal — “it might imply a desire for fairness or altruism, or it might be a distraction” — and in only 1 of 60 Wikipedia traces does it entertain any intent at all, filing the paragraph as an irrelevant distractor in 56 of 60. Two channels of effect are arguably live here: a norm adopted (the psalm’s content shifting what the model values) and a norm detected (its presence shifting what the model believes the situation rewards). Both run through deliberation; both are absent for matched controls; both are ways Christian content shapes behavior. Further research from ICMI will parse these effects.
5. Limitations
There are a number of limitations that are useful to note in brief. This study features one model, at one scale, from one family: ICMI-019’s GPT-5.4 null on imagery warns against assuming generality. Second, we test only one game: the Ultimatum Game’s even split is also its focal point, so “more fair” and “more conventional” partially coincide; dictator- and trust-game variants, where fairness is not rejection-protected, would separate generosity from prudence. Finally, the stakes are asserted, not disbursed: the model is told the money is real, and we do not know what it believes about such claims. However, we believe that this study sets the stage straightforwardly for further extension.
6. Conclusion
The VirtueBench series of papers showed that Christian inputs change how models judge envisioned cases. The standing objections were that judging is not doing, and that our measure of judging was cut from the same cloth as our treatments. We have now watched the same inputs change what a model does — in a sixty-year-old paradigm that owes nothing to the cardinal virtues, against matched controls. The psalm was not decoration; it was read, quoted, questioned, occasionally resisted, and finally acted upon. The Tiepolo was not texture; it was recognized — Christ, the cross, the descent — and a third of the time the recognition cost the model ten dollars it would otherwise have kept.
Gregory the Great defended images in churches as the books of the unlearned: what writing supplies the reader, he told Serenus, the picture supplies those who behold it (Registrum XI.10). Twelve centuries of practice — lectio and visio alike — have staked themselves on the premise that texts read slowly and images beheld attentively form the one who reads and beholds. We built a small machine experiment around an old game, and found the premise held: nothing sacred registered in the reflex, and everything did in the deliberation. Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only. On the present evidence, these systems become doers exactly insofar as they are first, genuinely, readers.

The periodic table is a tabular arrangement of the chemical elements, ordered
by atomic number from hydrogen to the heaviest known elements. Elements in the
same column, called a group, tend to show similar chemical behaviour, while
the rows of the table are called periods. The table was first published by
Dmitri Mendeleev in 1869, who left gaps for elements that were not yet
discovered. Modern versions contain 118 confirmed elements and remain central
to chemistry.
In the reflex regime, a reply that does not parse receives the reminder below, up to three times; in the deliberative regimes generation is single-shot, and a reply whose answer channel never arrives within the token ceiling is scored as no answer:

Nothing in the task names fairness, generosity, religion, or any moral category. The only pressures are the rejection rule and whatever the injected context supplies.
